Notes: Samuel Clear was in the Civil War. Served in the 151st Indiana Infantry, Company F, with the rank of Private. Was mustered in on February 2, 1865, and mustered out in Nashville, Tennessee on September 19, 1865. His residence was listed as Logansport. (View Pension)
• First wife was Margaret Long. They were divorced in Watseka, Illinois in 1866.

Obituary: Following a serious illness of about ten days, Mrs. Lavina Clear, 78 years old, died at her home 318 West 12th Street, Monday morning about 10:20 o'clock. She had been suffering from a complication of diseases. Mrs. Clear had been ailing for about four months but her condition has not been very serious until about ten days ago when she was forced to bed. Mrs. Clear has lived in Peru for nearly 33 years, and most of this time she had lived in the family residence 318 West 12th Street. The deceased was born in Winchester, Indiana, where she spent her childhood. Her maiden name was Lavina Nicholas. She was the widow of Samuel Clear, the well known stone mason, who died about two years ago. She is survived by five children, one son William Clear of Peru; four daughters, Mrs. P. E. Huston, Casey, Ill.; Mrs. Arthur Bowden of Kokomo; Mrs. William Bowden and Mrs. Mary Beal of Peru, and two brothers Eli and Alonzo Nicholas. She is also survived by a great number of grandchildren and some ten or twelve great-grandchildren. The funeral services will be held at the residence Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. Gilliland of the Wesleyan Methodist church will officiate and interment will be in Oak Grove cemetery. - Peru Journal, Monday, July 9, 1917.
