Obituary: HAD 109 GRAND CHILDREN. SAMUEL SALLEE TOOK UP A CLAIM ABOUT THIRTY YEARS AGO. Samuel Sallee, the well known Bell Township farmer who died last week, was the father of six living children and 109 living grandchildren. In all he was the father of ten children, four of them now being dead. Of the grandchildren, forty-five are of the third generation, sixty one are great grandchildren and three are great great-grandchildren. Mr. Sallee was 85 years old at the time of his death having been born June 18, 1823, in Preble County, Ohio. In the year 1841 he was married to Elizabeth Clear, who was also born in Preble County, the date of her birth being August 6, 1823. Mrs. Sallee died December 1, 1903, at the age of 80 years. Of the ten children which blessed their union, eight were reared to maturity, five of these being girls and the other three boys. Joel B. and William served in the Civil War, the former dying in 1862 of a disease contracted while in the Army and the latter being killed inbattle at Chattanooga. The other son, John B., is a retired farmer of Kingman County and now resides in Penalosa, this County. Mrs. Richmond DeVoe of Quincy, Illinois, Mrs. Blanchett of Harper County, Mrs. Hafstrom of Morrocco, Indiana, Mrs. Corley of Penalosa and Mrs. Benjamin Moore of Hutchinson are the daughters. Funeral services were held from the home and burial was in Lerado Cemetery. The six pall bearers at the funeral services were the six oldest grandsons. Another very interesting thing in connection with the life of Mr. Sallee is the fact that about thirty five years ago, he took up as a homestead the farm on which he died. The only record on file at the office of the register of deeds at the court house is the patent right granted to Mr. Sallee by the government. There have been no transfers, no mortgages, etc. Mr. Sallee lived there all of those thirty six years and made the farm pay well. January 28, 1909 Hutchinson News Weekly, Hutchinson, Kansas
